CAJ van der Voort, established in 1960, is a family-owned pipfruit business in Central Otago, New Zealand, known for growing premium apples, which are exported to over sixty countries across the globe as well as being sold within New Zealand. The business operates seven Orchards across Central Otago with a state-of-the-art packhouse in Ettrick. Employing up to four hundred staff at the peak of the season, CAJ van der Voort produces around 700,000 – 800,000 cases of apples each year.

Reporting to the Owner and working closely with the Post-Harvest Manager, the Operations Manager is a key role within the management team. The role oversees the operations of the Orchard Management Team including supporting the individual Orchard Managers in their day-to-day management of people, pruning, thinning, frost fighting, maintenance, pest control, new plantings, soil and water management, and harvest.  The role also oversees the logistics of getting produce from the orchard to the packhouse, and is directly involved in new crop planting and orchard expansion.


Applicants will demonstrate the following:


  • An understanding of horticulture, farming and/or logistics.
  • An appreciation for the critical nature of seasonal workforce requirements.
  • Proven ability to motivate, empower and lead staff to achieve goals with respect and credibility.
  • Demonstrated ability to develop and deliver land use and cropping plans.
  • An appreciation for the culture of a family-owned and operated business.
  • The initiative and aspiration to contribute to new initiatives and innovation.
  • A ‘can do’ pragmatic attitude with proven problem solving skills.
  • An understanding of logistics; ensuring product is where it needs to be, when it needs to be.
  • The ability to multi-task, work autonomously and be accountable for delivery.


Orchard Manager


There is also an opportunity for an Orchard Manager, reporting to the Operations Manager, to join the CAJ team. For those with technical knowledge of fruit growing, people leadership skills and a practical approach, this role provides the opportunity to oversee a large productive apple growing block in Central Otago (100ha).  If this role is of appeal, please contact us.
