Chief Operating Officer

New Zealand Rock Lobster Industry Council

  • Diverse Operational Role
  • Primary Sector Representation
  • Wellington, New Zealand

The NZ Rock Lobster Industry Council (NZ RLIC) represents New Zealand’s rock lobster industry, which is comprised of nine commercial stakeholder organisations whose members are involved in rock lobster harvesting, processing, wholesaling, retailing and exporting.  NZ RLIC is a leader in fisheries management practice and resource stewardship, working with Government, media, environmental groups and other marine stakeholders on behalf of constituents’ interests. As the industry’s umbrella organisation, NZ RLIC has a significant role in planning, advocating for and influencing the long-term future of this valuable industry and the lobster fisheries resource for the benefit of all New Zealanders.

New Zealand rock lobster is a premium seafood product that is provided to discerning domestic and international consumers. The impact of Covid-19 on the export market for rock lobster has been relatively short term. The demand for the product has recovered and is expected to be sustained.

Working closely with the CEO, the COO will be actively involved in the operational leadership of the business. They will make significant contribution to policy, contract management, stakeholder relationships and engagement, operational administration, and representation and advocacy.  Suitable candidates will preferably have experience within a regulated primary sector industry, and an appreciation of fisheries management and environmental sustainability.

Applicants will demonstrate the following:

  • Strong stakeholder engagement, communication and relationship building skills.
  • The initiative to deliver a diverse range of projects in a complex and demanding setting.
  • Superior analytical, planning and project management skills.
  • Sound commercial judgement and well-developed financial management skills.
  • Agile thinking, adaptability and an openness to innovation.
  • Courage, integrity and resilience.

This is a broadly focused role that offers personal growth opportunities to those looking to continue their career journey in a position of responsibility that has significant impact within New Zealand’s primary sector.
